There was an unacceptable number of incompletely labeled specimens received in the laboratory. Data showed only 15% of specimens were labeled completely with all needed information.

LSS

Increase from 15% completely labeled specimens to 76% by the end of January 2011.

  • Increased label compliance from 15% to 88%

  • Increased patient satisfaction

  • Saved 1040 urine cups/year - $166.40

  • Saved 69 hours/year of Non-Value Added Time (NVAT) for patients collecting urines

  • Reduced time processing non-necessary specimens – by 39hours/year - $526.50

  • Required information: Time, Specimen, Tech Code, Date, MR# (Name was on every specimen - 100%)

  • Return Patient Clinic collected the most urine samples and had the most incompletely labeled laboratory specimens

  • Time is the most frequently missed information

  • Collection Manager:

    • Provided 100% of the information needed except for time of collection for urine

    • Automated the process

    • Provided positive patient ID

    • Eliminated NVAT spent by laboratory personnel trying to get orders put in the system
